The Passacaglias for two pianos belong to the composer’s parisian period (1954-60)
It is the period when his dominant techniques based on the method of the “tetrachords” which often supports melodic materialseemingly demotic (modal). From that point of view, the Passacaglias can be considered as the model of the aesthetic views of Theodorakis for that period when, beyong the tetrachords, classical techniques prevail adapted to modern personal conceptions.
The sound world created by the impetuous clashes of the two pianos is certainly the most extreme and in any case the most enigmatic of those encountered in the composer’s wide-ranging work.
