INTRODUCTION
When my book about costumes from the villages of Corfu was published, while I was talking to my friend Professor Evridiki Antzoulatou – Retsila, she suggested that I extend my research to the costumes of Corfu town.
The idea appealed to me. Immediately I thought of my mother and her love for dresses. In her drawing room («salonaki») she always had a photograph of a portrait of Lady Jane Digby who lived in the last century and married Spyro Theotoky in 1840. Lady Jane Digby arrived in Corfu in 1842 and she had an excellent wardrobe of clothes, while her husband wore the Greek kilt. The Corfiot men and women were not from well behind as far as their appearances were concerned, as seen known paintings portraying known personalities of that era. I wanted though to look into the past and to find more details about the costumes of the Corfiots living in the town.
